Listen up, lovely Beauty Bible readers! Because we are talking about a revolution. A revolution both in natural, sustainable, super-ethical haircare and – speaking personally – in our attitude to haircare bars.

So, cards on the table. Or rather bars on the basin. We’ve trialled pretty well every type of hair product – some good, some great and some neither – but Team Beauty Bible has always shied away from trying shampoo and conditioner bars on our coloured-for-decades, dry to very dry hair.

Persuaded by the expertise behind EarthKind, we overcame our prejudices and we’re very glad indeed we did. The brand’s credentials are impeccable. Founder Tony Maleedy is a pioneering British trichologist, formerly with the late Philip Kingsley (pretty well the leader in tricho-haircare). But one thing we should say: if you’re used to sloshing on rinse-and-go products, these feel quite different plus you might need to leave a little bit longer as the bars need ‘activating’ for a few seconds under warm water before you begin the process of application; depending on your hair type and length that can take a few minutes.

Before we give you a wee bit of detail about the products, you might want to know THE RESULTS. Well! Bottom line is our mops looked gorgeous, with sparkling colour and lovely shine. And to our amazement, styling with a hot brush into loose waves was easier than ever.

Eight Beauty Bible winners will receive the three EarthKind products detailed below, plus an organic rubber comb (£17.50) and a storage tin for one of the bars (£5.95).

The product that first had us squeaking with excitement at the very thought is the Elasticity Bar/£12.50, which is designed to be used by all hair types once or twice weekly as a pre-wash conditioning treatment. It contains a bunch of natural and organic ingredients including macadamia butter, organic macadamia and coconut oils and plant proteins plus hydrolysed elastin. You apply on damp hair, rubbing the activated bar between your hands to produce what they call a ‘rich cream’. Possibly because of hard water, we didn't achieve anything like a rich cream, more like a watery milk, which we rubbed all over pretty thoroughly, combed through with the rubber comb, then left for half an hour under a shower cap. The idea is that the active ingredients are absorbed into the hair cortex so there’s little to rinse off. Hmmm, well, there was indeed little to rinse off and hair felt soft and supple.

On to the Bergamot & Sage Shampoo Bar for dry and coloured hair/£6.95. This lathered up beautifully and went on like a dream (although we found it sort of disappeared then, but that didn't seem to make a difference to the effectiveness). So we did a second shampoo and rinse – although the brand says this shouldn't be necessary. Hair still feeling good and almost squeaky clean.

Last up, the Organic Oats Conditioning Bar for all hair types/£8.95. Rubbing the activated bar near the scalp, as directed, was surprisingly soothing so we did that pretty thoroughly before rubbing it up and down the lengths of hair. (See what we mean about allowing a few minutes longer than usual?) Rinse off with warm water; finish with a cold shower and Ta-dah! Time to dry and style and cross our fingers…

We are astonished and delighted that our scepticism was proved 100% wrong. These EarthKind haircare bars are amazing. And we love that the packaging is as sustainable as the bars. If you can’t wait to try them, click on the product names above to order. And one last thing: they don’t cost the earth in any way - kind to your hair, kind to the planet and kind to your purse.
