Plumper, bouncier, younger-looking skin – yes please! And Correxiko collagen can help that happen. 50 Beauty Bible readers can win a month’s supply of Correxiko marine collagen capsules, each prize worth £29

Actually, it’s not just your skin that can benefit from taking this collagen supplement. Correxiko co-founder Dr. Dinuk Dissanayake (easiest just to call him Dinuk, he says) promises that you’ll also see a positive difference in the quality of your hair and nails, plus a more supple body and increased energy.

So what is this miracle worker? Little bit of biology here: collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and has effects from top to toe. But, like lots of things, we produce less collagen as the years pass – and that’s a factor in skin getting more saggy and baggy, hair thinner and weaker, nails flakier and so on. So giving our systems a boost of quality collagen is A Very Good Idea Indeed.

Dr. Dinuk trained at Kings College Hospital in London, specialising in gastroenterology. He first came across collagen 20 years ago when his team was studying the effects of collagen in speeding post surgical wound healing (which it did). That led him to investigate how supplementing with collagen could influence the ageing process and, ultimately, to setting up Correxiko.

One of the things we really admire about this brand is Dr. Dinuk’s insistence on the quality of the ingredients. Correxiko sources their marine collagen from Canadian wild-caught deep sea fish skin, which is more expensive but sustainable. Some other brands use farmed tilapia from the Far East where the fish are reared in overcrowded conditions and heavily treated with antibiotics. The polluted water may also seep into drinking water.

You may know there’s been a bit of scepticism about whether collagen really works and if so, how. According to Dr. Dinuk, ‘there are now many clinical studies on the efficacy of collagen supplementation but the mode of action is still theoretical’. In other words, it does work (if the product is formulated in the optimum way, as hydrolysed collagen peptides) but no one is quite sure how.

This next bit is for readers interested in the science; otherwise just skip the next paragraph and whiz down to the end for a chance of winning a month’s supply of Correxiko marine collagen capsules, worth £29.  Just one more thing: Dr Dinuk emphasises that taking a collagen supplement is the icing on the cake – you also need to eat well and drink lots – LOTS! – of water, as well as being active and prioritising sleep.

Now here’s the geeky bit! There are likely two ways that a collagen supplement works. The first goes like this: after the molecule is broken down, the fragments are absorbed into the bloodstream and distributed through the entire body, including the skin, where small fragments remain for up to 14 days. Then comes the interesting bit: your body is essentially tricked into thinking that these fragments indicate collagen breakdown – as would happen with a big tissue injury, for instance – and repair is urgently needed. So it stimulates fibroblasts to produce more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid – the compounds that give our skin its youthful qualities. The other probable mechanism, Dr. Dinuk explains, comes about because we don’t get many of the building blocks of collagen through our diets nowadays (interestingly, bone broth is a good source). Correxiko collagen can help compensate for the dietary deficit, giving our collagen-producing cells the raw material they need.
