    I've recently returned to drinking Scotch after a long time away and have discovered that the Peaty Islays suit my taste buds a lot more than they did 20 years ago. There are some very expensive Islays out there-this isn't one of them and falls into the budget end of the price range. The peatiness isn't to everybody's taste but if you like that then this offers good value for a weeknight tipple. Of course there are dozens of better Scotches out there but you have to spend a lot more to enjoy them. Some reviewers say this Bowmore No 1 tastes like medicine or cough syrup. It doesn't-it is the peat smoke and that isn't overpowering. I'll be ordering again.

    Whilst I am no expert in appraising single malt whiskey, I can only review according to my own personal view, I know what I like and I do like this. Coming in at £20.50 for a nicely boxed single malt you would probably not be expecting too much. However, I was very surprised at the depth of taste in this little gem. It is slightly peaty, slightly sweetish and has a nice rounded mouth feel, more akin to a better known expensive bottle. I think that for this very low price you are getting a very good bottle of single malt here at a price you would expect to pay for blended. As I said, I am certainly not an expert, but I think in this price bracket you would be hard pressed to find better.

    Very pleasantly surprised. I do love a nice peaty Islay. I've mostly only tried the more aggressive ones - and loved them all. But, this is very very different. It's smooth, caramel like - with perhaps some orange or citrus in there. It's NOT a bit chemical as one other review mentioned. What I particularly like about it is the peatyness hits you more subtly on the finish - it's not quite as 'in your face' as most Islays. I like it a lot. Especailly for the price!!! I would definitely buy again. It's possibly a good introduction to Islays for those nervous about trying the full on peatyness of more commonly associated with Islays.

    I’m not a connoisseur or anything but do like a nice slightly peaty malt on occasions. Bowman number 1 is exactly that. In my opinion much nicer than other cheapish single malts. I got 2 bottles at a good price from Amazon (£23) compared to Tesco (£35) and the “on-offer” price of £25 from another supermarket. I am a bit of an amateur with Whisky and like to have cold water with mine or ice. So I can’t compare neat v neat as a taster but the way I drink it with water, Bowmore No. 1 is smooth and slightly peaty (or maybe smokey).

    This Islay is one of the best I've had for a while for its rock bottom price! I'm absolutely made up with it and would wholeheartedly recommend...to anyone who likes Islay Whisky. If you don't understand its complex flavour profile then I wouldn't recommend buying it. Personally I love the distinctive taste and this one is hard to beat.

    とにかく近年で数が増えたボウモアの銘柄の1つです！
    このNo.1、その他にもLEGEND、スモールバッチ、ブラックロック、ゴールドリーフ、17年ホワイトサンズ、10年ダーク＆インテンス等々…
    これらはバーボン樽熟成のみのものが多く、区別が付きにくいのもあります。
    そもそもスタンダードな12年はバーボン樽熟成のものから大体7割、シェリー樽熟成のものから大体3割の割合で合わせたものだそうです。
    シェリー樽での熟成を経ると濃い色合いになるので、そこで赤みを帯びたブラウンというアイラ系でも特徴的なの色の濃さを持つボウモアのオリジナルカラーは作られています。

    その点ではこのNo.1やスモールバッチ、LEGENDはバーボン樽熟成のみのもので、全て色は明るいゴールドカラーです。
    No.1はこの第1貯蔵庫の名前にちなんだそうですが、ファーストフィルのバーボン樽使用の作品です。
    とにもかくにも分かりづらいので箇条書きにしてみます。

    ・No.1
    ファーストフィル(※1)のバーボン樽熟成のものでノンエイジ(※2)。
    とにかく塩辛さの主張が強く、バーボン樽由来のバニラ香はやや控えめ。
    スモーキーさは普通のボウモアと同じくらい。生牡蠣や刺身、イクラなどとの相性が最高にいい作品です。
    値段的には比較的手頃ですし、突き抜けた塩辛さもあるのでハイボールでも全然合うのは確かです。

    ※1　ファーストフィルのバーボン樽熟成とはバーボンを詰めていた樽を空にした後初めてウイスキーを詰めて熟成させる事。
    このファーストフィルのバーボン樽熟成のものが空になり、また新たにウイスキーを詰めて熟成した場合セカンドフィルのバーボン樽熟成と呼ばれます。
    ※2　ノンエイジとは○○12年のような熟成年数の表記のないもので、単純に熟成の浅い若いお酒だったり、
    ブレンデッドならブレンドするなかに表記しないような若いお酒が入っていたらノンエイジ扱いになります。
    逆に言えば、○○12年の表記のある場合はブレンデッドならブレンドに使ったウイスキーは全て12年以上のものということです。

    ・LEGEND(レジェンド)
    ファーストフィル等の表記のないバーボン樽熟成のノンエイジもの。
    初心者向けとAmazonの説明書きにもありますが、塩辛さはNo.1より控えめでバニラ香はスモールバッチより控えめにあり、
    No.1とスモールバッチの中庸のような味わいですね。癖が弱めでNo.1より飲みやすさは上かもしれないです。
    こちらもハイボールに合うと言えば合います。No.1同様に刺身とか海のものとも合いますがナッツやジャイアントコーンとの相性もいいです。

    ・スモールバッチ
    ファーストフィルのバーボン樽熟成のものとセカンドフィルのバーボン樽熟成のもののブレンドのノンエイジ。
    塩辛さもありますが、上2つよりバニラ香が強く、香ばしさをより感じられる作品です。舌触りも一番柔らかいでしょうか。
    同じく刺身やナッツ系との相性はいいです。
    4000円台半ばという値段もあり、上の2つより上級なもののようです。

    ・12年
    バーボン樽熟成のものとシェリー樽熟成のものをブレンドしたボウモアを代表するスタンダードな12年の長熟品。
    塩辛さもありますが、甘味も強く、レーズン香、プリンの底のカラメルのようなほろ苦い甘味、ダークチョコの香り、バニラ香と感じられ、スイーツ感のある味わいです。
    色も上の3つより濃いですね。赤みを帯びたブラウンといった感じです。
    どんな飲み方でも美味しいです。

    ・10年ダーク＆インテンス
    シェリー樽熟成のものにホグスヘッド(バーボン樽熟成の普段よりやや小型の樽)のブレンドの10年の長熟品。
    色は12年よりも濃いですが、味のバランスは12年と殆ど変わらないです。
    ただ、全体的に優しくやや薄くてウイスキー初心者向けの飲みやすさはありますね。ただ、最近は値段が高めで5000円前後まで値上がりしています。
    緩めの12年といった感じで、ストレートで飲みやすい感じはありますね。

    ・ブラックロック
    シェリー樽熟成のものとバーボン樽熟成のものをブレンドしたノンエイジ。
    熟成年数不明のノンエイジですが、色は上記の5つより濃く赤みがかった焦げ茶色といった感じです。
    ボウモアらしい塩辛さはベースにありますがダークチョコの風味が強くレーズン香やバニラ香に麦の香りが広がります。
    12年は甘味が主体でスイーツに近い味わいですが、このブラックロックは酸味がもう少し強くフルーティなニュアンスがより強めでしょうか。

    とりあえず大体5000円までに買えるものを纏めてみました。
    このNo.1について言えば、塩辛さが一番の売りですし多分ボウモアでは一番塩辛さがあります。
    キルホーマンマキアーベイや、アードベッグ10年、タリスカーストームにも負けないくらいです。
    この点での比較で言えばキルホーマンマキアーベイやアードベッグ10年はNo.1と比べるとかなりスモーキーでコクもありますし、
    タリスカーストームは独特の針葉樹のような風味があり爽やかな感じです。
    ただ、ボウモアというそもそものブランドの味に塩辛さを求めるならこのNo.1が断然優れていますし、
    ボウモアならではの風味と強い塩辛さが融合したなかなかの名品なのは間違いないです。
    口に含み目を瞑れば、荒れて口の中に波しぶきが飛ぶような浜辺に佇んでいるかのようですね。
    ボウモアの中でも断然塩辛さに特化した作品とも言えるので、好き嫌いはある程度分かれるものかもしれないですね。
    この塩辛さが好きなら通常の12年よりも癖になるものだと思います。

    Am Wochenende hatten wir lieben Besuch und dann kann man ja auch mal was gutes trinken. Also Bowmore ! Über Geschmack lässt sich bekanntlich nicht streiten und deswegen brauch ich darüber nicht schreiben. Es ist einfach ein sehr guter Whisky. Das Beste aber war der Preis. Ich habe die Flaschen am Prime Day gekauft und ca 30% gespart. Darauf kann man sich dann ruhig einen genehmigen. Es muss wirklich nicht immer der ganz teure Whisky sein den man im Fachhandel bekommt.
