What you need to know

Learn how to knit eyelet stitch with Charmaine Fletcher's Christmas table runner.

With its red yarn, gold ribbon and jingling bells, could this table runner project be any more festive? It’s an easy Christmas make that gives you the chance to have a go at eyelets and elongated stitches when working the triangle border. We’ve styled this table runner up on a classic mantelpiece, but it would work equally well on a shelf or bookcase – just follow Charmaine's advice on how to resize to fit your chosen area.

What do I need?

Runner: 110cm long x 15.5cm deep to fold

Top knit tips

To make the depth smaller, follow all the instructions but deduct stitches from the plain shelf section. To make it shorter than 100cm, work fewer pattern repeats but try to maintain odd numbers as this is visually more attractive.

To block this project, prepare a towel, a bowl of water, pins and kitchen roll/tissues. Concertina the pattern repeats on top of each other, with each bell above the one below. Hold the layers together, covering the bells with your palm to protect them - try not to get the bells too wet. Dip the Runner in the water and gently squeeze out. If the bells get a little wet, dry them with tissue/ kitchen roll. Pin out on the towel to the given dimensions. The triangle points are a gentle curve.
