Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

ok, so it's a referb unit; nothing used about it other than the packaging not sealed? - absolutely no signs of use or damage so worth getting circa £20 off the retail cost. very easy to add to my existing set up, added to a gen 1 Echo thats been 'demoted' to my office (post purchase of a show 8 for the kitchen) wanted something to beef up music as i play a lot in the background whilst working; jut hate 'tinny' cheap sounding 'noise' pleasantly surprised with the result. good sound output from the paired units now. - not going to blow your socks of & not a patch against my Sonos but very good for a cheaper option / alternative. would guess it would be even better if used with a pair of Echo's to further enhance the effect (or perhaps newer ones?) overall good & recommended, as with all Echo products.

As a "refurbished" unit I expected less, but I got more! It's mint condition. Sounds punchy. Warning: do not try to set this up when the kids are in bed.. accidentally woke everyone in the house 😂
Note: When set up with 2 echo dots 3rd gens in Stereo pair, you will find the Dots become bassless. Sadly, this is how they're supposed to work, but that also takes away the midrange from the set up.. So, I've ran a second lot of Dots (also in Stereo) on a multi speaker set up, they now act as the middle sound. Hence, I've now got Tweeter, mids and a bass bin. It sounds epic 😎
The device looked brand new and clean, no obvious signs of wear or prior use on the casing or the speaker cone. The only sign that this was not brand new was the cut sticky label on the lid of the box showing that it had been opened before. So this review is effectively a review of the Echo Sub at the discount price of £84.99.
I have other 'proper' hi-fi and home cinema kit which sounds better, but also costs a lot more and takes up a lot more room! My sub has been paired with an Echo 2nd gen in my kitchen where space is very limited. The sound quality and level of bass capable before distortion is impressive for a subwoofer at this price and at this compact size.
Having said that, I have deducted a star for the following reasons: 1) Setup flaws: - I was able to pair the Sub with my kitchen Echo quickly enough in the Alexa Android app, but subsequent music requests seemed to be ignored by the Sub Pair and continued to play through the Echo only - even for Amazon Music and TuneIn which should both play through the Sub Pair. It turns out that this is because my existing Echo was already the "Preferred Speaker" for that room before adding the Sub, so music was being played on the Echo only. Un-setting the Preferred Speaker and then setting the Sub Pair as the preferred speaker for that room fixed this for me.
- Like with the Echo "Stereo Pair" feature, the "Sub Pair" name is automatic and can not be renamed. It does not really affect my day to day usage since it is the preferred speaker for its room and is part of a multi room group, so I do not need to refer to it by name, but it would still be nice to have a more meaningful reference in the device list in the Alexa app, especially to avoid confusion if I were to buy another Echo Sub... [Edit: the option to name stereo pairs and sub pairs during setup in the Alexa app has been added since I originally wrote this review]
2) EQ: - it would be useful to be able to tweak the sub levels relative to the device(s) it is paired with. We don't all have identical sub placement so this ought to be up to the individual and not pre-determined by Amazon! There is no floor space for a sub in my kitchen but mine is placed between the ceiling and the top of a kitchen cabinet, which works fine, particularly since kitchen listening is done standing not seated, it works a little too well though, with slightly overpowering results. To work around the lack of individual sub level control I was able to get satisfactory results by tweaking the EQ of the Echo to increase the mid and treble, moreso the treble.
3) Compatibility restrictions: - - I could never justify the original price tag for a sub that is locked down to Amazon Music services/partners only and has no other purpose. The refurb price is what brought the cost just within the threshold of acceptability as a treat for a room where space is at a premium. For other rooms where I have more space to play with, then I would be tempted to put that money towards a more flexible setup and connect an Echo Input into it.
Was quite excited to receive my new sub, all be it refurbished but when it arrived didnt work, wouldnt connect or go into setup mode. 35 minutes on the phone to amazon technical support and they tried everything with no joy (woman on the phone was very pleasant and helpful) replacement ordered which is fine but have to wait another 2 day. Wonr be ordering from amazon certified refurbished again. We have loads of Amazon devices in the house from firestick to echo's and tablets and none have ever missed a beat bar this one. Quite disappointed
A good little sub, but adds no benefit whatsoever when paired with a stereo pair of echo 3rd gens / +'s, as all the bass is removed from their woofers and sent direct to the sub. This has been confirmed by Amazon support / Development who state that is the way they are intended to work in the technical case I raised to query this. I.e. a stereo pair of Echo 3rd gens/+'s produce the same amount of bass without the sub. So don't waste your money, unless you are paring with the cheaper echo Dot's in which case the result is fine and worth the money spent.
This is an update on the sub! I am happy to say i finaly set up my echos and sub and added Multiroom! What a sound they make i just got fine tune sub as roof is jumping ! I think a few tweaks would be useful? The echo does not update subs softwear yet! Plus it would be helpful to have a light to say when its on or off! But for the price of the sub and speakers its a steal! Combined you will not get a sound system at the price esp if you check Amazons Deals! I myself am well happy anyone want an old seperates system? They are gone who uses tapes records cds anyhow?
