If beauty had a buzzword right now, it would be 'oil'. Hair products, lip treatments and the multi-tasking oils that work on everything from acne scars and uneven skin tones to cracked heels all deserve a place on your dressing table. If you thought oils were just for dry skin, here are seven ways to work them into your beauty routine that you've probably never thought of.

1. Scenting your hair

Hair perfume might be a thing right now, but using an oil to scent your locks can also nourish dry ends and tame frizz as well as leaving you with sweet-smelling strands. Pick up jasmine-scented Argan oil on your Moroccan getaway, or try lemon and Ylang Ylang oil.

2. Treating blemishes

If you haven't been fighting breakouts with tea tree oil since the second you turned 13, where have you been?! This natural oil is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, just swipe across your blemishes with a cotton pad. Side note: don't use neat tea tree oil - buy a pre-blended bottle or mix a few drops with a carrier oil to dilute it.

3. Evening out your skin tone

If hyper-pigmentation is playing on your mind, oils can help to even out skin tones and improve the appearance of scars. Bio-Oil's active ingredient Purcellin oil™ allows plant extracts like calendula oil and vitamins A and E to penetrate deeper into the skin, stimulating the growth of new skin cells.

4. Moisturising your lips

For anyone who's as obsessed with lip balm as we are, lip oils were definitely something we were sceptical of. But thanks to their lightweight, non-sticky texture, we're addicted. Try jojoba oil, almond oil or apricot kernel oil.

5. Taking off your make-up

Ditch the oil-stripping foaming cleanser for a natural oil ASAP. Not only do they break down tricky formulas like waterproof mascara, avocado oil can be moisturising for dry skin while almond oil can boost skin's suppleness thanks to its high vitamin E content.

6. Giving your skin a glow

Even if you've got oily skin, consider letting oils play a part in your morning skincare routine if you want that dewy glow. Mix a couple of drops of Bio-Oil in with your moisturiser for a subtle sheen (a little goes a long way), or dab a few drops along your temples, above your Cupid's bow and on the bridge of your nose for a radiance that looks more natural than highlight.

7. Making your bath feel like a spa

We're not all blessed with spa trips once a month, so the least you can do is treat yourself to a relaxing evening in the tub. Light a candle, stick on a soothing playlist (keep electrics well away from water) and add a couple of drops of lavender or chamomile oil into your bath to soothe your mind as well as your skin.

To even out your skin tone, improve the appearance of scars and get softer, smoother skin, try Bio-Oil now. Available at Boots, Sainsbury’s, Superdrug, Tesco and other national retailers, RRP £8.95 for 60ml
